The deaths of Romeo and Juliet are tragic ones, to say the least. After trying to put an end to the fight between their families, thier love for each other turns out to be deadly. There are many events throughout the play involving many people that contribute to their downfalls. However, I believe that the person most responsible for their deaths is Friar Lawrence, because there are many events involving him in which he could've prevented them from dying.
His first mistake is agreeing to marry Romeo and Juliet. He knows that their families are enemies, but he thinks that marrying their children can bring peace to both households. While this could be the case, it's a very risky decision to make and the Friar goes through with it anyways. As it turns out, he made the wrong choice since his decision paves the way for the events to follow. Another risky choice Friar Lawrence makes is carrying out his plan to bring Juliet to Romeo. After Romeo was banished from Verona for killing Tybalt, the Friar gives Juliet a potion that will fake her death. After that Romeo is supposed to get her from her tomb when she wakes up and bring her to Mantua. Most of this plan works except for Romeo not receiving the Friar's letters telling him about the plan. When he gets news from Balthasar that Juliet's dead, he thinks she acually is. This was another case where Friar Lawrence tries to help the couple but ends up making their situation worse. When Romeo sees her "dead" body, he commits suicide by drinking poison. Friar Lawrence's third and final mistake is mad at Juliet's tomb. When she wakes up and sees that Romeo's dead, she takes a dagger and stabs herself in front of the Friar. even though, he tries to convince her to become a nun and try to forget this, his effort is not enough. Instead, he watches nearby as Juliet kills herself. It was expected he make a better decision considering he talked Romeo out of suicide after being exiled from Verona.
While there are many events throughout the play that were key roles in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, it is Friar Lawrence who should be considered most responsible. His risky decisions could've been prevented and prevent the downfalls of the two main characters/
