Love at first sight is something many people think is cliche. Whether it's in movies, TV, or in books, it seems that every time two people lay eyes on each other for the first time, they instantly fall in love. While many times it seems exaggerated, I believe Romeo and Juliet instantly fall in love the first time they see each other at the Capulet ball.
Before any of this happened, Romeo was madly in love with another girl named Rosaline. In Act 1, readers knew that Romeo was depressed about this because Rosaline wouldn't marry him. She decided to become a nun instead. But Romeo still tries to pursue her by going to a party hosted by his family's enemy that she was attending. It was at that party where he first saw Juliet and asked for a dance right away. A video on YouTube (posted below) explains that men can feel attraction towards a girl in a matter of milliseconds, much like Romeo. It also explains that women can take a little longer to feel the same way towards men, which explains why Juliet was a little shy the first time she was talking to Romeo during the dance. At that point, Romeo completely forgot about Rosaline and was madly in love with Juliet. If that wasn't enough, they saw each other again during the famous balcony scene where both explained how much they love one another. In that same scene, Juliet explains how she doesn't care that Romeo is a Montague while she is a Capulet. This part is very important because it shows that Juliet loves Romeo for who he is and doesn't hold a grudge for him even though he's considered to be an enemy. It also shows how much love they have for each other despite having only met a few hours ago. Had Romeo not laid eyes on Juliet, none of this would've happened. Romeo would still be depressed about his situation with Rosaline while Juliet would end up together with Paris in a marriage organized by her father. But one quick glance changed the lives of both Romeo and Juliet forever thanks to love at first sight.
So while some cases of this might be exaggerated, misunderstood, or even fake, this didn't turn out to be so for Romeo and Juliet. When they saw each other for the first time, they truly started to feel love for one another.
This video and article explain more about the concept of love at first sight.
