Highlighting the best of the best, with an added twist
While many hockey fans are trying to get through the dog days of summer waiting for the new season to start in 2 months, hardcore hockey card collectors are as busy as ever as Upper Deck is in the midst of pumping out new sets spanning 3 different seasons. This week, Stature has the spotlight, and based on what we've seen the first few days, it's definitely lived up to the hype as a mid-end set with a high ceiling.
Even though there are some notable names missing from the autograph checklist, including guys such as Cole Caufield and Quinton Byfield, there have been no shortage of monsters pulled in the first couple of days. The Caufield bounty that Upper Deck surprised us with last minute also adds an extra chase for collectors.
After seeing countless boxes opened since release, I decided to make one little change to the criteria to make this list: every card on here is a 1 of 1. It seems like everyone and their little sibling has pulled one for this set, so I wanted to feature some of my favourites, in no particular order. And if you're anti-Stature? I'll see you next week when 22-23 Black Diamond releases.
1. Filip Gustavsson Base Rookie - Black Parallel - 1/1

We're starting it off with this super clean card for one of the most underrated rookies from this class. Filip Gustavsson quietly had a dominant 22-23 season for the Minnesota Wild, and there's a good chance he can catch some more traction in the hobby if he proves that it wasn't a fluke. The card itself is also a strong example of why many collectors love the design for Stature, as black and gold are a combo that will always play.
2. Troy Terry - Patch Auto - 1/1

Snapping it around to another player who I think is still underrated, the 4-colour patch on this beauty signed by Troy Terry really stood out for me the second I saw it. One big difference in this edition of stature compared to 20-21 is the bigger window size for patches, which I'm personally a big fan of, and some of the other cards on this list should help give you an idea why.
3. Philip Tomasino - Rookie Excellence Insert - Black Parallel - 1/1

But before we do that, I wanted to show some love to an insert that I've been a big fan of so far. Stature is reliable when it comes to offering ones that look super slick, and 'Rookie Excellence' is no exception, with this Philip Tomasino auto being one of the first 1/1 autos pulled from this subset.
4. Sean Durzi - Rookie Patch Auto - Purple Parallel - 1/1

How can you not like a patch with half of the iconic L.A. Kings crown on it? Sean Durzi is one of the better young defensemen in the game and although he's now an Arizona Coyote, I know some Kings fans who would love to get their hands on this hockey card. The purple background only makes it pop more.
5. Matthew Tkachuk Base - Purple Parallel - 1/1

Not to be confused with the black 1/1s, we've also seen some nice purple 1/1s pulled from Stature, and one of the first to make its way towards eBay is Matthew Tkachuk's, who asserted his dominance as one of the best players in the world during Florida's run to the 2023 Stanley Cup Finals. Seeing this one may hurt for Flames fans, though.
6. Eeli Tolvanen - Patch Auto - Purple Parallel - 1/1

Eeli Tolvanen is by no means the biggest name to chase in this set, but the patch on this one is so filthy that it'd be a crime not to include it. This is another card that gets elevated from having a bigger patch window, and it doesn't hurt that the Preds logo is a source of some of the nicest patches in the league. Now that Tolvanen has a bigger role on the Seattle Kraken, will he see more success as a player?
7. Mason McTavish - Base Rookie - Black Parallel - 1/1

This one is another example of some of the nasty colour match cards that Stature has to offer. Many collectors are still high on Mason McTavish, who could easily have a breakout season with the Ducks in 23-24. With all the young talent on the team, I'm sure their fans would love to see them finally take a step forward.
8. Cale Makar - Patch Auto - Purple Parallel - 1/1

Cale Makar is simply on another planet. He's electrifying to watch game by game, which is why the lucky owner of this 3-colour patch auto could fetch a nice payday if they decide to sell it. And if they don't? That's perfectly understandable. This hockey card would be the centrepiece of almost any collection.
9. John-Jason Peterka - Rookie Patch Auto - Purple Parallel - 1/1

This is another guy to keep an eye on next season. The Buffalo Sabres are trending up, and J.J. Peterka is one of the faces of their new-look team. The name itself makes this card a monster, and the gold in the patch matching with the gold foil on the card is icing on the cake.
10. Moritz Seider - Base Rookie - Purple Parallel - 1/1

If you've read past lists, you know I like to save the best for last, and this 1/1 base card of one of the biggest rookies in the class makes a strong case for being worthy of this spot. Mo Seider is the backbone of Detroit's defense, and after a bit of a sophomore slump, he will definitely be looking to come back with a vengeance next season.
Honorable Mention
This one hasn't been pulled yet but once it does, everyone in the hobby who doesn't live under a rock will know.
UPDATE: Sure enough, 12 hours after this was originally published, JNaggs Card Shop ended the chase.
